"Financially, we are saving around £1,000 in the cost of paper and a further £20,000 in labour time..."

The Co-operative, one of the UK’s best known businesses, has switched to r2c Online to electronically manage their fleet defect reporting system from their food distribution centre in West Thurrock.

Such a busy distribution centre was in need of a new solution for its fleet defect management, as Alex Scott, Transport Compliance Manager at the West Thurrock site explained, “We have a vast, multi layered and complex fleet operation. With vehicle defects and scheduled maintenance to take into account, the adoption of r2c Online system has effectively reduced administration time. An overview of the current health of the fleet is right at your finger tips.”

The Co-operative’s food distribution operation is split across eight regional distribution centres and three smaller satellite depots. Each distribution centre is a round-the-clock operation, serving thousands of stores across the UK each day. The West Thurrock site, in Essex, has 300 drivers with 285 vehicles leaving the yard between 3am and 11pm each day to serve 650 stores in South East England.

To manage such a large operation, organised data is king and Alex explains that he closely measures the health of his fleet, with r2c Online resulting in some tangible improvements for the operation, “Financially, per year, we are saving around £1,000 in the cost of paper and a further £20,000 in labour time. Drivers, in particular, no longer have to spend time hand writing defect reports.”

Alex explains why he and his team chose r2c above all others, “We chose r2c Online because the system is so user friendly. Anyone with basic computer skills can pick it up very easily which is useful for our temporary staff. Also, r2c Online is cloud based so I am able to access it away from the depot.”

Alex continued, “r2c Online really listened to our needs. They are consistently looking for ways to improve the system. Consequently, they were receptive to our operational demands and made changes that suited us. It took just 10 days to set up from start to finish. Their support team is next to none and are only an email and telephone call away. We are very impressed.”

Nick Walls, Managing Director of r2c Online commented, “The analysis that the Co-operative have done shows the measurable benefits that can be achieved with r2c Online. When you multiply this out across a large fleet you can see the savings and efficiency improvements are massive. We are delighted for Alex and look forward to building our relationship with Co-operative across their distribution centres nationwide.”
